The truths of CF Montreal on the departure of Thierry Henry

Thierry Henry has decided to put an end to his adventure with CF Montreal. A choice that tore apart the president and the technical director of the Canadian club.

The news fell like a cleaver. Less than two years after arriving in Canada to take the reins of CF Montreal (formerly Impact Montreal), Thierry Henry decided to return his apron. Right after the official announcement by the North American club, the 98 world champion explained his reasons via a message posted on Twitter. So it was mainly for family reasons that “Titi” left.

France Football reported that the former Arsenal player was also tired of the harsh working and sanitary conditions on the other side of the Atlantic. Seeing the difficult season arrive, Henry, therefore, preferred to prioritize his family. Since then, the leaders of the CFM have taken the floor to explain the underside of the departure of their coach. Starting with President Kevin Gilmore. Surprised, the boss of the Canadian team is not at all angry with the French.

CF Montreal was surprised

“The timing is far from perfect, but there is no timeline when it comes to a personal decision. It was a surprise because our plan was for him to be here for the long term in order to build the identity of this team, in collaboration with Olivier (Renard). I think few people can understand how difficult the last season has been for the Canadian teams, who have spent a lot of time in their suitcases and in the hotel. When we hired Thierry, no one had imagined that we would go through a pandemic of such importance, that it would disrupt our life, so I am not shocked by his decision, ”he told Le Journal du Quebec.

Then it was Olivier Renard who said more about the timing chosen by Henry to pack up. A chance for the CTO to confirm that this was not an overnight decision since Henry asked to leave two weeks ago. “I let him think and he contacted me on the 18th (February). I felt the situation was more negative than positive, so we followed up with his agent to see what the club could do to not lose him. We tried to find the best solutions, but he has several small children and he knew we were going to travel a lot. Out of respect for Thierry, I started making a list (of successors) like when you go to the grocery store, but I haven’t contacted anyone. It shouldn’t take too long, however.
